Zulu is one of the greatest historical action movies ever made, and one of the broad war movies. It is based on what historian Michael Glover terms “the most highly decorated battle in British history”, the defence of Rorke’s Drift during the Zulu War of 1879. Eleven of the defenders received Britain’s highest award for military valor, the Victoria Cross–the rarely awarded counterpart of the US Congressional Medal of Honor. The movie is a landmark in the art of cinema for its astonishing combination of space, cross-cultural engagement, a right account, kindly script and dazzling cast. This 1964 film never looks tired, despite my many years of rerunning it in 16mm, the Criterion laserdisc, and now the Front Row Entertainment Inc. DVD. Anecdotally, military colleges have obsolete Zulu to point to the power of directed massed musketry, and leadership and teamwork in combat.
Zulu is the greatest achievement of the career of British actor Stanley Baker, who co-produced with US-born, formerly blacklisted director Cy Endfield. Nothing else in the genre really measures up, including Endfield’s so-called “prequel”, Zulu Dawn, or other epics based on British colonial wars, such as Khartoum. It was filmed on spot in the grandeur of Natal, South Africa, with descendants of the Zulu warriors who took share in the modern action portraying their forebears. The prominent Zulu politician and stale chief, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, plays the Zulu leader, his distant relative Cetewayo. Mass Zulu participation in the project guaranteed the uplifting dignity and authenticity of cross-cultural characterisations of the film. Early sparkling scenes with masses of Zulu extras reveal the Zulu royal kraal, with a mass wedding of warriors in progress as news arrives of the annihilation of a strong British force at Isandhlwana. These unusual scenes probably never could be filmed again because of social and cultural change. The nearest conceptual comparison in the war genre that comes to mind is the cross-cultural aspect of Tora! Tora! Tora!
Stanley Baker believed so strongly in Zulu, despite difficulties in raising finance, that he sank considerable of his enjoy money into it. Playing a British Army engineer officer thrust by events into leading a desperate defensive action following the anguish of Isandhlwana, he heads a strong cast, including a young Michael Caine as an upper crust infantry officer. This film deserves the very best frame-by-frame and soundtrack digital restoration and DVD transfer that technology can provide, working from an recent 70mm print. Meanwhile, the Front Row Entertainment Inc DVD, about the equal of the Criterion laserdisc, will have to do. At the time of writing, Sir Michael Caine (age 69) seems to be enjoying the afterglow of his prolific career in cinema and dabbles in restaurants, and Dr Buthelezi (age 74) is Minister for Home Affairs in the Government of South Africa. James Booth (age 69) continues on stage and camouflage.
Michael Glover’s book, “Rorke’s Drift” (Wordsworth Editions 1997) is recommended reading for anyone with a detailed interest in the historical background.

Beautifully filmed on area, with an outstanding, stirring bag by John Barry, this film features solid but appropriately understated performances by Stanley Baker, Michael Caine, and Jack Hawkins.
I hesitate to mention the gruesome, politically accurate pre-quel, _Zulu Dawn_ which was released almost 25 years after _Zulu_, but any viewer who has the depressed experience of seeing _Zulu Dawn_ should not be keep off from seeing _Zulu_, which shines in comparison.
Whether one is fervent in military history or a “movie for men who like movies,” _Zulu_ is a agreeable addition to a film library. From first to last, it is a compelling, well-behaved film.

What a let down! The promise of “never before seen footage” turns out to be the same “never before seen footage” from the last DVD. The bonus materials on this disc are a joke (and not in a comical “ha ha” plot) . The special “Introduction to the film by Dan Aykroyd” is 23 seconds long. The “Day on the Blues Brothers Tour” is nothing more than a lame performance by the recent Blues Brothers at the House of Blues. But the trusty insult is the featurette called “Remembering John: An ultimate portrait of John Belushi.” It clocks in at 9 minutes long (including credits) . Ultimate?? This is John Belushi, not Garrett Morris!

You might be reading this wondering, “So what was this guy expecting? ” Well, how about an audio commentary? Perhaps some outtakes? Bloopers? Maybe concert footage of the Precise Blues Brothers on tour with Steve Martin? Why not include Blues Brothers performance footage from SNL? The Blues Brothers is a factual classic movie, one of the few SNL movies that is actually a suited account. Joliet Jake is recently released from prison and picked up by his brother Elwood. The two watch that the orphanage they grew up in is going to be sold to the Board of Education unless they can raise $5,000 to give to the Status Assesors office. The Blues Brothers try to come by the money by putting their band befriend together and doing a few gigs. Along the design, they enrage the Illinois Region Police, the Illinois Nazi Party, the owner of Bob’s Country Bunker, and a band from Nashville, the Proper Ole Boys. This movie is astronomical from beginning to extinguish. The musical numbers are all mammoth including Jake’s revelation in the church, Ray Charles singing Shake Your Tail Feather, Aretha Franklin singing in her soul food diner, the peformance in Bob’s Country Bunker, and finally the concert at the ruin including two of their best songs. As well, there is action galore from Elwood jumping a bridge with their 1974 Dodge Sedan to their chaotic mosey through a crowded mall to the police slouch at the destroy through the streets of Chicago( especially Lower Wacker Drive) and the hobble up the staircase to the Assessor’s office. The Blues Brothers has something for everybody and should not be missed.

The Blues Brothers are played to perfection by John Belushi as Jake and Dan Aykroyd as Elwood. The two actors are hysterical together throughout as they arouse honest about everybody in the city of Chicago. There are far too many lines to mention, but it is certain that they had fun making this movie. There are plenty of musical cameos also including Cab Calloway, James Brown as a preacher, Aretha Franklin as the owner of a Soul Food diner, Ray Charles as the owner of music store, and John Lee Hooker as a street peformer on Maxwell Street. The film also stars Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Kathleen Freeman, Henry Gibson, and many more. Also peer out for a very comic cameo by Frank Oz and a short appearance by Steven Spielberg. Also worth mentioning is the Blues Brothers band including Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Murphy Dunne, “Blue Lou” Marini, Tom “Bones” Malone, Steve “The Colonel” Cropper, Alan Rubin, and Willy “Two Bits” Hall. The Collector’s Edition DVD offers widescreen presentation, the unusual theatrical trailer, a making of documentary with interviews with the cast and crew, and footage not seen since the fresh release in 1980. This is a gargantuan movie that all viewers will earn something to like in it. Do not miss this classic!

I plan that Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle were delightfully comical in this film. 2 girls from Georgia go to California chasing a dream, come by a itsy-bitsy side-tracked, but execute their dream anyway, meeting some improbable people along the map. The characters played by Martin Landau and Ian Richardson were SOOO laughable - especially when Mr. Manley goes to the characterize store, looking for “The RRRRRRRap share.” I idea that the actors playing the girls’ boyfriends were great too - a limited kooky, but genuinely suitable people. Nisi and Micky may appear to be gold diggers, but it turns out they have hearts of gold, and for this, they are rewarded. Who says safe girls do last?
I liked this movie; it made me laugh at a time when I was down in the dumps. I know Ms. Berry and Mr. Landau have been in better movies; but this one showcases their ability to be laughable. Besides, if you cannot have any fun now and then; why form movies in the first region. The station is colossal because it shows fair what can happen when two blacks girls follow their dreams. Even though it doesn’t seem like it will work out for them in the raze, it really does after all. Troy Beyer is the writer, Robert Townsend directed, dismal actors starred in it. Give this movie a break; it is a comedy; it is not supposed to be a drama like “Expansive”. The scenes in the restaurant were comical and realistic; two shadowy girls meeting celebrites they have only read about and heard about. If that is not laughable I don’t know what is. When will we (African-Americans) originate giving each other credit for our accomplishments in the film industry??? It is high time we started recognizing each other’s talent. When we do, others will search for our talent as well.

I worship Howard Hawks’ films…Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are astonishing pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the novel Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking…man, Baz must really esteem Hawks’ movies, too.

As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they’re perfect for each other (watch Noteworthy Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, and Moonlighting as other examples of the beget) and the group of underestimated misfits who arrive together to fight base are two immense elements traditional again and again by Hawks. Throw in a bit of John Ford’s The Searchers and its hard scrutinize at racism leading to inhuman deeds and mix well and you have…Australia.
The predicament recent audiences may have with Luhrmann’s original movie is it’s very, very earnest. This is straight ahead legend storytelling with its heart on its sleeve and hat and boots with never a wink to the crowd in the theater to say “ain’t these people quaint”. You either capture in or you don’t. If you do, like I did, you’re in for a hell of a go.

This, I feel, is the flip-side to The Shaded Knight. Splendid and putrid are trapped in something akin to a battle and an embrace in Nolan’s Gotham City. You root for Batman, but he does stuff that is on the sinister side of freedom and civil rights. The Joker is pure crazy, but he’s the most mesmerizing character in the film. In Australia, there are worthy guys and abominable guys and you are either really expedient or twirl your mustache ghastly. The main villain actually may be a bit too two-dimensional in that aspect, but it didn’t pain my overall enjoyment.
Why? Well, fable melodrama is hard to pull off…I’m talking about the true stuff here. The current BBC production of Bleak House is a astronomical example. There are very gracious and very, very unpleasant people in that yarn, but the acting is so extraordinary you rarely if ever obtain yourself rolling your eyes (like whenever I’ve watched Smallville…see: unpleasant fable melodrama) . Kidman and Jackman sell their characters…the displaced Englishwoman and the rough-hewn “Drover”. They are thrown together unbiased to, initially it seems, thwart a base cattle baron from monopolizing the beef industry in the country. But the other colossal sage, the main one in fact, centers around Australia’s “lost generation”. These were Aboriginal children who were fathered by white men who didn’t claim them. They were taken by the government, the mothers had no rights, and handed over to the church to be taught to “act white” and then work in the servant class. Nullah, played by the astounding child actor Brandon Walters, is one of these “creamies” who has been hidden on the ranch now owned by Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) . Lady Ashley discovers what is going on, is scared by the law, and works to retain him hidden as well. Why the Drover cares so distinguished about Nullah becomes determined later in the film (no, it’s not what you assume…that would be too easy) and Jackman’s experience with stage and musical work does him proud here. He can do earnest better than almost any actor alive when he needs to and his later exercise of the f-word (the only curse I can remember from the entire film) hits so hard, in fair the honest emotional moment, that it kills. Russell Crowe was originally cast as the Drover but backed out. If Crowe had done the film, and I have liked him in other things…the Napoleon-era British navy film that I can’t remember the name of honest now, it would not have worked. Crowe never loses that bit of edge and the Drover, at one point, really has to fully atomize down and become completely vulnerable. Jackman shines at that point.
Anyway…a warning, the movie is long 2 hours and 40something minutes, but I didn’t realize that until I had left the theater. I saw it alone…I was out of town at a pediatrics meeting…and that’s a suitable thing. I didn’t have to cloak from Holly the few times the movie hit me a bit too hard and do that cough-throat clearing thing we dudes do to mask up a stray dash.
I was looking forward to seeing this movie when it was release slow last year given all the hype, and was not dissappointed!
Director, Baz Luhman, has served up a slab of nostalgia ala Australian style with all those dazzling elements we fancy from films of the 40’s and 50’s, breathtaking, sweeping landscapes, glowing costumes and two fair actors in Kidman and Jackman who find the essence of the film. It nostalgia in every sense of the word, in every frame. The acting style reminds us of Bogart, Grant, Bacall and Dunne. The record is anecdote in every arrangement and unprejudiced fine. I loved the salute to “The Wizard of Oz”a really nice touch!
Of course we all know how it’s going to kill. Watching Australia was like eating a box of Quality Street chocolates. Clear I know what I’m getting, but I mild admire it.
For those of you who want to expend a few hours (and I mean a few; it’s almost 3 hours) being completely entertained then thisis the movie for you. I only wished they had inserted an interval on it’s theatrical release and made the whole event at the movies a true nostalgic experience.
I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t like this movie, unless you objective aren’t up for a feel profitable record. I want to eye more movies being made like this!!!! Well done to all!!!

The 1988 sequl to one of the most successful movies of all time finds Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Detroit police detective Axel Foley, and once again playing a fish out of water as he tries to solve a series of heists in Beverly Hills that may be connected to the attempted murder of his friend, a Beverly Hills police captain (Ronny Cox). Constructed in a much flashier and faster-paced visual style than the first film, the song still remains the same as Foley tries to keep his job in Detroit while solving crimes for the Beverly Hills cops. Murphy again makes the most of culture shock for comic effect, and the easy rapport between Murphy and Billy (Judge Reinhold), now a cheerfully over the top Rambo-esqu figure, is still the centerpiece of this series. While not the least bit original, director Tony Scott (Crimson Tide, Top Gun) puts his own stamp on this installment and keeps the action and the laughs coming. –Robert Lane
